Event-related potentials are generated by averaging brain activity following the onset of a stimulus and in doing so capture how information flows through the brain. Early potentials tend to be sensory, subsequent late potentials are involved in evaluative/cognitive, motor and inhibitory processes. Comparison of ERPs against normative data can help detect issues in cognitive processing.
